Sunscreen, the protective shield from the harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays of the sun, is a must-have in every skin care regime. It’s a myth that Asian skin does not need a sunscreen…it definitely does!

With the depleting Ozone layer and global warming, the need for protecting our skin from harmful rays of the sun has increased manifold. Selecting a good sunscreen is tricky and depends on several factors like skin type, skin color, sun intensity, degree of sun exposure.

Here are a few tips to apply sunscreen

·      Apply a sunscreen at least 20 minutes before exposure on that portion of skin that is bare and unprotected by clothing or hair. (Means bald men need sunscreen on their scalp too!)

·      A sunscreen should be minimum of SPF 15 and a maximum of SPF 50 for best protection.

·      SPF selection is based on season and degree of exposure. Though summer is supposed to be the hottest, winter sun is the most intense.

·      Continue to wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, rain or shine.  As the seasons change you are still at risk from the damaging UV rays of the sun so protecting it is a vital step when trying to acquire healthier skin.

·      The sun's rays are strongest between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, so reapply sunscreen frequently and take breaks indoors if you can. If your shadow is longer than you are tall, then it's a safer time to be in the sun (you should still wear sunscreen, though).

·      If you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose.

·      Apply more sunscreen (with higher SPF) when you're around reflective surfaces like water, snow, or ice.

·      Sunlight reflects even through windowpanes and glasses when you are indoors. So you need to wear a sunscreen even when you are inside the house/office etc.
